Hidden Road Initiative

UC Berkeley HRI

The University of California, Berkeley has been home to one of the many HRI chapters in California and has continuously been emboldened by passionate and dedicated members who are eager to promote educational equity and give back to their Armenian roots. Throughout the years, we have organized a variety of projects such as a podcast series, as well as had multiple members participate in the annual HRI summer camps as well as the English Zoom tutoring program.

In the summer of 2023, during the Artsakh blockade, our chapter organized an online summer camp for Artsakh. With our students unable to attend camp in Armenia, we decided to bring the annual HRI summer camp to them through zoom! We offered a diverse curriculum of art, poetry, social issues, STEM, dance classes, and we invited special guests such as Robin the Robot and Lyoka to speak to the students. More recently, the UCB chapter compiled stories and artwork from our students originally from Artsakh and produced a book to spread their words and poetry; in this way, our ultimate aim was to provide our students from Artsakh an outlet to voice their experiences and emotions amidst such drastic changes.

Some ongoing fundraisers we organize have included selling Krispy Kreme donuts in San Francisco, designing and selling stickers, working with our university to do crowdfunding, and partnering with various restaurants to conduct fundraisers. As a chapter, we have also organized picnics and game nights to help bring our members together.

We are very happy to be a part of the HRI family and to work collaboratively with our members to plan for yet another productive and exciting year! We are always open to recruiting members and hearing new ideas, so please feel free to reach out!
