2023 Annual HRI Reunion

2/17/2024

The best traditions continue!!!

This time, HRI Reunion 2024 was held in different parts of the world, gathering our chapters, beneficiaries, members, volunteers, and friends.

On February 7th we had the annual HRI Armenia Reunion in Yerevan and on February 17th the Southern California reunion at Golden Road Brewery and Northern California at Blue Oak Brewing Company.

The theme of this year’s Reunions was the LOVE that we continue to share, connecting Armenia to the Diaspora, and supporting the development of the border villages of Armenia and Artsakh.

As in previous years, we shared our journey and good memories with HRI and brainstormed plans for future!!!

Scholar CV and Cover Letter Workshop

1/25/2024

As part of the scholarship program this year, we are actively developing our students’ soft skills. The focus this time was on the creation of proficient curriculum vitae (CVs) and cover letters.

The training was conducted by Arsen Shamilyan, the founder of the Moto - Taxi Yerevan.

After the training, our students formulated their CVs, which will be used when applying for different jobs and international exchange programs.

On December 16th, our team participated for the first time ever in the Impact Hub Yerevan annual Christmas Bazaar! We used this an as opportunity to showcase the work of our students and their families and worked closely with them to help them bring their ideas to life. All proceeds of their items’ sales went directly to them.

Our items included things like honey and handpicked tea prepared by our @hri.youthcenter.akhpradzor students from Makenis, Gegharkunik, Artsakh bracelets handmade by one of our scholars from Kolkhozeshen, Artsakh, dried fruit from Meghri, embroidery and handmade bags made by the women of Shvanizor, Syunik (@meghratel__ ), and postcards, calendars, and books of our Artsakh students’ writings and photos of their vilages.

We are grateful to our students and their families for their hard work in preparing for this event. We also extend our thanks to everyone who took the time to visit and support their endeavors, contributing to the ongoing efforts of connecting with the talented individuals who reside in our remote and border villages.

Welcoming the 2023-2024 Scholar Cohort

11/16/2023

On November 12, 2023, we welcomed the new cohort of HRI Scholars for the 2023-2024 academic year at Impact Hub, Yerevan.

First-year students were joined by their family members. 4 out of 5 new scholars were forcefully deported from Artsakh on September 2023 and chose to continue their education at new institutions in Armenia.

During the event, scholars had an opportunity to learn more about the Henry Keledjian Scholar Service Program to begin designing their projects for the upcoming semester.

Former scholars then showcased their community projects from the previous year, serving as exemplary models for the new students. Since many of our community projects were inspired by the Jane Youth Center (@jane_center) and the Quest project of Kolkhozashen, Artsakh, we were honored to have Ashot Gabrielyan (@ashotgabriel) with us, who was a Teach For Armenia teacher-leader in the village.

During the event, first-year scholars also received Chromebooks (Laptops) from Eastside College Preparatory School (@eastsidealums ) in East Palo Alto, California. Thanks to the donation, scholars are now equipped to excel in their studies and service projects!

We concluded the event by honoring the principal of our partner school in Poghosagomer Artsakh, Stella Arustamyan. We are extremely saddened at the forced deportation of Mrs. Arustamyan and her entire school community of Poghosagomer. Despite the painful events that took place in Artsakh, we hope to continue our partnership for a new and bright future, always standing by our students in Artsakh and border villages in Armenia.

2023 Summer Camp: Kareenna Habedian

9/7/2023

Looking back, Hidden Road Initiative's Summer 2023 camp experience was one of the best days of my summer.

From laughing our hearts out to crying our eyes out, the five days that I spent there left a huge impact on me. From making life-long friends, and building a great bond with the kids. Having my class as a safe space for the kids allowed them to talk about everything and anything, and built a trusting bond between us, hence allowing them to open up about their sorrows.

This summer, 71 students from 13 different border villages were invited to Hankavan to participate in the camp and attend a variety of classes taught by different volunteers.

Frontline Therapists had been working with many of the students from this village since the 2022 September conflict. For this summer, I was invited to teach “Self-Care class”. This was the first time in 14 years where camp was not held in their home villages due to the constant threat of war. So it was very important that we had full time social worker / counselor in camp.

There are still traces of war in every corner and especially inside all of us. To this very day, borders are not safe, and the kids living in Armenia and Artsakh are in constant fear of any intense sounds.

I'm so thankful to the Hidden Roads initiative for allowing me to stand by these kids and sharing what I have learned with them.

Summer Camp 2023: Anahit Malumyan

Being at camp opened my eyes to how much more I could be involved with my homeland. It gave me a personal and intimate relationship with the younger generations of Armenia. My experience as a whole inspired and invigorated me to grow in my hayrenasirutyun. Even though I enjoyed teaching STEM lessons and seeing the kids creativity through what we experimented in and talked about, I think my most memorable part of camp was playing games and interacting with the kids. That is where I felt I saw the kids be their happiest and care-free, having fun with their new and old friends from back home and other villages.

Summer Camp 2023: Sarin Keofteian

The most memorable part of the camp was finally actually meeting the students (and some teachers) whom I had met and spent time with during HRI's online English classes! It amazes me to see how kids and teenagers from different villages, as well as teachers from different places around the world unite for the camp! I am thankful for having the chance to make unforgettable memories and special connections with such an amazing team and group of students! I think it was one-of-a-kind experience for me and everyone at camp!

Last week, supporters and partners gathered at HRI's end of the academic year ceremony, where Henry Keledjian Service Program scholars presented their remarkable projects and graduates of our scholarship programs received recognition for their hard work. We are so proud of our scholars for creating and implementing one-of-a-kind projects that focus on the long-term development of their villages and the local population.

Special thanks to the Armenian Missionary Association of America for lending us their beautiful space, to our H. K. Service Program Anush Mkrtchyan for her relentless hard work and dedication, and to the school principals of Makenis, Akhpradzor, and Shvanidzor for cooperating with us.
