As a medical student, Lala knows that basic knowledge and quick-thinking can save lives. She is also aware that, following the 2020 war, life for the residents of her native village of Makenis, Gegharkunik now includes the harsh reality of living near new, dangerous borders, where anything can happen at any time. With this reality in mind, Lala organized a special training session by the International Red Cross for 20 students from the Makenis School. During this session, professionals instructed the students in all aspects of first aid, equipping them with the essential skills and knowledge to provide immediate care in medical emergencies, potentially saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries.
To share their newly acquired skills with the community, the students organized a follow-up event where they demonstrated some of the most important techniques they had learned. Reflecting on her project, Lala said, “Not only do the children feel good that they can help their fellow villagers, but I also feel that I was able to help my community to some extent.” Thanks to the direct partnership of UCLA's Hidden Road Initiative Chapter, each student also received a first aid kit to use in future emergencies.
