Since 2020, HRI's online tutoring program reaches students from the border villages of Armenia who are excited to learn English! In weekly sessions between our students and English tutors from around the world, we foster a close relationship between mentors and students and continuously work to create a safe community for everyone in our program.
With credit to our premade curriculum and resources, the students are immersed into the English language, as instead of direct translations from Armenian, the program focuses on conversational skills, as well as a strong foundation in grammar and vocabulary. Our program launches every Saturday with a community-based segment of song, game, poetry, art, and self-expression before continuing into one-on-one sessions with their teacher.
Students from border and rural villages in Armenia and Artsakh are paired one-on-one with our amazing volunteer teachers. This hands-on approach allows teachers to adequately address the students' skill level and ensure progression. Tutors close each session with a formative assessment and assign independent practice to promote long-term understanding. In these weekly classes, an undeniable relationship is established between our students and volunteers abroad as we collectively promote an English-learning opportunity in each village virtually.

Meeting In-Person
After holding weekly sessions online for months, if not years, a few our students had the opportunity to finally meet their teachers in-person in Armenia, a testament to the deep relationship the English Classes establish overseas!
Hear from Our Tutors
Our HRI chapters play an integral role in recruiting tutors, with most of our tutors being current university students. Take a look below to hear from a few of our teachers.
Obviously distracted, Meri once found the Google Meets filters. As we clicked through various hats and background options, the lesson promptly transformed from Fancy Nancy reading comprehension to 'name what accessory I'm wearing!' Every week is a new adventure with these two sisters, and though it can be difficult waking early to teach, I am consistently inspired by their tenacity and eagerness to continue learning — I always laugh when they ask me what I'm going to assign for homework and look forward to meeting them in-person someday soon! -Sofia Gevorgian

[One of my most memorable moments is when] my students and I found our houses on Google Earth and learned the names of other countries in English and Armenian. I really love the community aspects of the program and when the students do art projects [during the group Zoom segment]. -Paul Deardorff
